Week 7 Science - Dry Ice

What a great way to start a Monday - Science!
This week we had a break from space and experimented with Dry Ice which is the solid form of Carbon Dioxide. We had great fun pouring water over it and watching it 'boil' away, squirting in dish washing liquid and last but not least adding food colouring! Take a look at our videos and pictures to see what an awesome way it was to start the week.

Observatory Visit

A few weeks ago we visited the Cawthron Atkinson Observatory (located at our school!) We were really unsure of we'd be able to see anything because of all the cloud cover. But right on time the clouds parted and we got a beautiful view of the moon. We could see heaps of craters on it. Planet Venus shone brightly for us and we could also see Saturn and Mercury.

Funky Fashion Begins!

This term our inquiry topic is Funky Fashion. Our end goal is to design two costumes for our production and to enter Eco-Fest in August.
Today we started by working in our groups together to design an outfit out of 5 sheets of news paper and 2 metres of tape. Check out our handiwork!

Shaping up in Maths

In Room 10 this week we've been learning about about Geometry. Did you know that if you add the faces of a 3D shape and the vertices together then take 2 away this gives you the number of edges!!!! Wow!!!!!
The mathematical equation for this looks like E = F + V - 2. Well done to the Hexagon's group who found this out from their investigation making 3D shapes. The Triangle's group today learnt how to draw cubes on isometric paper. Circles and Squares have been looking at the features of 3D shapes. Check back next week to see some more of our geometry work.

Softball with Marty Grant

Last week we were very fortunate to have one of the world's best softball players visit us at CTS. Marty has played for the NZ Black Sox and the team have won the Softball World Cup many times making them one of NZs most successful teams.
Marty taught us how to catch and pitch a ball correctly and how to bat. The dance Marty taught us to remember how to pitch was great. 1, 2, 3, 4!
The best part was playing a game, heaps of us got home runs. Check out our super action shots.

Measurement in Room 10

For the last two weeks in Room 10 we have been measuring and converting units in maths, so far we are still converting between metres, centimetres and millimetres.  But we are hoping to move onto converting km by next week and using this knowledge to help us with area and perimeter.  We have measured the length and width of the top court, field, hall playground etc.
By a Year 6 Student.
